There are many things to consider when purchasing kid's bedding, whether it is for babies, toddlers, young children or even teenagers. Regardless of what age child you are buying for, you will have many decisions to make. The most expensive part of decorating your kid's room will be the furniture.
The Nursery:
Waterproof Twin Mattress
For the nursery you will need a crib, dresser and a changing table. A rocker can be very handy for feeding time providing a quiet, peaceful environment for Mom and baby. Cribs need to be sturdy and meet safety guidelines. Many cribs convert to toddler beds and some even have an attached dresser with changing table attached. These are especially useful for smaller areas. You may also select a separate dresser with or without a changing table. A crib mattress needs to be firm and should have a waterproof covering on it. If it is not waterproof, you can purchase disposable pads to be placed under the sheet. As for bedding, only a fitted sheet is required. For safety, it must be tight-fitting so it won't come loose, and infants should not have pillows or blankets in the crib with them.
Toddler:
Once your kid has outgrown the crib, it's time for a twin (with or without a trundle), bunk beds or full size bed depending on how much space you have. If you have a crib that converts to a toddler bed, you only need to make the conversion. If you don't have the paperwork that came with the crib, you can call the manufacturer or check their website for the directions. If you know there will eventually be another child (or possibly children) in the room, you may want to take that into consideration.
Now you will also want to purchase additional bedding. Toddlers are ready for a pillow, top sheet, blankets, and comforters. Many themes are available in toddler size as well as twin and full size in stores and online. Natural or organic fabrics are preferable over synthetic as it will not irritate a child as quickly. If the dresser has a changing table on top, simply remove the pad. Next, you will want to add storage for toys. If you select a toy chest make sure it is designed so it cannot pinch your kid's fingers. Bookcases or cubes can be used, providing they have no sharp corners and are secured to the wall. Teaching kids to put their toys away is easier if you make it simple for them.
Young Child:
If your toddler has not already graduated to a larger bed, now is the time. Kids at this age will most certainly want a theme of their choosing. Space is more important now as younger kids spend a lot of time playing in their room. Many kids like to play and bounce on their bed and adding a duvet cover helps keep the comforter cleaner. Most are 100% cotton and machine washable.
Teenager:
Teenagers are changing from kids and becoming young adults. They will want their rooms to change with them and will want to have it decorated their way. The bed may or may not need to be replaced, but the dresser most likely will. A larger dresser will provide more storage space. Girls will probably want a mirror on the dresser, a full length mirror or maybe both. A desk and chair will be needed for doing homework and especially if your kid has their own computer. If your child likes to read, the rocker can be kept. The bedding theme and colors will change, as will the layout of the room. The room has now evolved from nursery to a private space for your teen. They will now want to have friends over, but that's life with a teenager. You have survived your own childhood and teen years, but you might question if you can survive you kid's childhood.
Kids can be rough on furniture, therefore good quality furniture (not necessarily the most expensive) is recommended. Our children are special and deserve to be safe and have the best we can give them.
